Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly significant across various aspects of life. In Adult Social Care, there is a particular focus on how AI can assist Local Authorities in enhancing resources and ensuring that people with lived experience achieve the best possible outcomes in their care.

To explore how AI can enhance Adult Social Care in the North West, NW ADASS commissioned Transmute Worldwide Ltd to conduct an AI project from June to October 2024. The project’s aim is to equip councils with practical resources for their digital transformation journey in adopting AI. It will outline actionable next steps and offer reliable examples of AI use cases in Adult Social Care.

Following engagement with North West colleagues, other ADASS regions, Local Government Association (LGA) networks, and people with lived experience, we have produced the following resources:

1. A report focussing on the following questions:

  1. Understand what AI is in the Adult Social Care field specifically – is there an agreed definition, and if so, what is it?
  2. How is AI currently used in Adult Social Care?
  3. What AI is currently utilised in North West Local Authorities (LAs) in Adult Social Care?
  4. What are the challenges in the utilisation of AI in Adult Social Care?
  5. What opportunities could AI offer in Adult Social Care?

2. A Good Practice Guide for AI in Adult Social Care, including:

  1. Adult Social Care AI Maturity Matrix
  2. Adult Social Care AI Risk Register
  3. Adult Social Care AI Solutions – a list of AI Solutions that can be searched with bandwidth costs
  4. Questions to ask AI Solution providers
  5. Case Studies: Applications in AI and Adult Social Care
  6. Curated Advice from the UK Government on AI and Digital Guidance, Public Sector Use Cases and Academic Research
